Dr. Cecil Farrar MA, MB, BCh, MRCGP, MICGP, DRCOG, FP Cert, Dip Occ Med
|
Born in Co. Wicklow, Eire, Dr. Farrar studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin, before graduating from there in 1976. He moved to Burton-on-Trent in 1977 to take part in a three-year general practice vocational training scheme being run by Burton Postgraduate Medical Centre. Having put down roots in the town, he decided to stay, taking up a partnership offer with the New Street practice of Drs. Grey, Moloney and Hunter in early 1981, and later supervising the practice relocation to Lichfield Street during the redevelopment of New Street and the building of the Octagon Centre in 1988.
As well as Membership of both the Irish and the Royal Colleges of General Practitioners, Dr. Farrar holds a number of postgraduate diplomas, mainly reflecting his involvement in general practice but also his interest in industrial/occupational medicine. He was for many years Company Medical Officer to Ind Coope Burton Brewery and later on to Bass Brewers before having to resign through pressure of work at his own surgery. This pressure also forced his retirement from the post of Clinical Assistant in Dermatology at Queen's Hospital, Burton, where he worked a half-day a week for many years with Dr. Nelson at the 'skin clinic'. Based on his dermatological experience, he is now able to offer a wide range of minor surgical procedures to patients at the surgery.
As a result of his long career in this old-established town practice, Dr. Farrar now knows most of his patients and their families personally, having looked after many of them from birth. Friendships have been forged over the years, which adds a more personal touch to consultations, creating a welcome contrast to the 'conveyor belt' that many believe the NHS is presently becoming.
Chief among Dr. Farrar's outside interests is horsemanship, and he has instruction in this on a regular basis, both locally and further afield. Classical music is another favourite pastime, especially going to live chamber and orchestral performances. Vocally-trained, he enjoys singing in choirs and ensembles when time allows. He also plays piano (badly!), and attends a weekly ballroom dancing class with wife Clementine. He and Clementine have three children - Greville, a medical student in London, Camille who studies violin at the Royal Northern College of Music, and sixth-former Justine, who has a passion for flying.
